Ian Wright has admitted that he was shocked to see Arsenal sign Martin Odegaard in 2021.

The Gunners spent £30 million on signing the former Real Madrid dynamo [The Athletic].

And honestly, it looks like a masterstroke.

Odegaard scored again last Sunday as Arsenal beat Spurs 2-0 to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.

Overall, the Norway international now has eight goals and five assists in 17 Premier League outings.

The 24-year-old is arguably Arsenal’s most important player in this title surge – well, one of them anyway.

And Wright has admitted to The Wrighy House podcast on Spotify that he couldn’t believe his former club actually landed him.

He said: “I remember when Odegaard came. I did something for Norwegian TV and I was saying ‘I am very, very surprised we got him’ because at the time, he was too good for us. He’s genuinely a God send.”

Odegaard is certainly Arsenal’s finest creative midfielder since Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard quit Arsene Wenger’s side back in 2011 and although it has taken a decade or so, Mikel Arteta finally has a worthy successor for the former Barcelona maestro.

With Gabriel Jesus out until March, Arsenal have needed Odegaard’s goals even more and when the Brazilian is back, well the Norwegian magician firing on all cylinders wouldn’t harm their title bid one bit.
