Newcastle United star Karl Darlow is looking to leave St James’ Park in the January transfer window. But Toon boss Eddie Howe could yet convince the goalkeeper to stay on Tyneside.

That is according to the Daily Mail, which reports Darlow is now keen to leave Newcastle in search of regular game time. The 32-year-old has only played one match so far this season across all competitions. He has even now lost a seat on the bench to Martin Dubravka, too.

Howe has promoted Dubravka to the reserve role behind Nick Pope after cutting short the Slovakian’s loan to Manchester United. He has acted as the Toon’s backup shot-stopper in their past two Premier League matches and started at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.

Darlow made his only appearance of the season so far against Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup in August. Pope would go on to open the Magpies’ following ties in the competition. Howe immediately saw Pope as his No1 goalkeeper after he paid Burnley £12m last June.

Newcastle also have Loris Karius at the club and are set to extend the German’s short-term contract. The German joined the Toon following Dubravka’s move to Manchester United in September. He is yet to feature for them but will act as Howe’s No3 to Pope and Dubravka.

Darlow wants to leave Newcastle as Championship clubs court his transfer

So, Newcastle have told Darlow that the club will consider offers for his transfer during the January window. Several Championship clubs are showing an interest in securing a deal, as well. But Howe is likely to frustrate Huddersfield Town’s attempts to get the 6 ft 3 stopper.

The Terriers have asked the Toon about Darlow’s availability to leave St James’ this month. But they need to sign a goalkeeper immediately while Howe only intends to grant any deal at the 11th hour. He wants to hold off on a deal in case Pope or Dubravka sustain an injury.

Darlow is unlikely to push to leave Newcastle in a January transfer, either, despite wanting to leave for regular minutes. The Nottingham Forest product, who left the Reds to join the Magpies in 2014, is relaxed about his situation as he shares a good relationship with Howe.

So, should Howe want Darlow to stay at Newcastle as his third choice, the goalkeeper may yet overlook a transfer. But he would likely want assurances of being ahead of Dubravka as Pope’s understudy. The Toon also wish to resolve Karius’ future before looking at Darlow’s.
