Amid her daughter Jessica’s participation in the 2023 Australian Open, which is currently ongoing, fans of the Pegula family are still curious to know how Kim is doing after her health scare last year.
ESPN reported on June 14, 2022 that the Buffalo Bills and Sabres co-owner was “undergoing treatment for undisclosed health issues.”
The family didn’t relay the nature of the health issues at the time. They said, however, that they were “grateful for the progress she has made over the past few days.”
Jessica Pegula beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich, earning her place in the third round of the Open, which is taking place in Melbourne.
What happened to Kim Pegula health-wise in June 2022?
ESPN reported on June 14, 2022 that Kim Pegula was undergoing treatment in an ICU in Florida for health issues. The nature of the health issues were, however, “undisclosed.”
The Pegula family issued a statement saying she was “receiving medical care” following some “unexpected health issues.”
The outlet then quoted Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen as saying: “She’s done so much for our organization, and we all love her so much. Again, as a team we’re saying our prayers, and we just ask that you guys do the same for us, please.”
Two weeks later, on July 2, Sports Illustrated’s Fan Nation reported on a second statement from the Pegula family. It clarified that Kim was “progressing well and is resting and rehabilitating from a health issue.”
Jessica Pegula separately reassured fans that her mother Kim was ‘doing a lot better’
Pegula told reporters at Wimbledon in late June 2022 that her mother was “doing a lot better now.”
That’s why I’m here,” Jessica said after winning her match against Donna Vekic. “If she wasn’t doing well, I probably wouldn’t have come.”
Which ought to have quelled some of the anxieties people may have felt regarding the whole situation.
“I flew out Wednesday last week,” Jessica added, “and within that time she was in a really good condition, where I felt like everything was fine, and I felt like my family had everything under control.”
And finally: “She’s progressing and she’s been doing rehab. I felt comfortable coming here. But that’s why I didn’t play any warmup tournaments.”
Fans want to know how Kim Pegula is doing in 2023
Despite reassurances from Jessica and the family as a whole, fans are still keen to know more about the nature of Kim Pegula’s “undisclosed” health issues.
One tweeted earlier this month that they sometimes “randomly think about Kim Pegula” and wonder “how she’s doing and if she’s OK.”
“Best not to try to guess,” they added in a comment, out of respect for her privacy. Another said that they had recently had a “one hour investigative discussion” about the situation, and added: “I just miss her and wish/hope she could see all the magic with our team” – meaning the Buffalo Bills.
The thing that got people thinking about her over the last week or two appears to be her absence from the stands during a Bills game, despite her husband’s presence there.
She has a fascinating life story
Kim Pegula was perhaps one off the less likely candidates for the “most powerful woman in sports.”
According to reports of her adoption agency’s understanding of events – Kim has almost no memory of it – her biological parents left her on a street corner in front of a police station in Seoul, South Korea.
Ralph and Marilyn Kerr adopted her right at the start of 1975. She was five years old at the time, in the words of the Democrat & Chronicle, had “not [had] a very pleasant life” up to that point.
She met Terry Pegula while angling for a waitressing job at the Old Library Restaurant in New York. He happened to be dining there that day. One thing led to another, and now she is the co-owner of the Bills and Sabres – “the very definition of the proverbial rags-to-riches story.”
