Southampton have reportedly held internal discussions about signing Danny Ings 18 months after the England international departed St. Mary’s to join Aston Villa.
According to the Athletic, the 30-year-old forward is a target for Southampton amid rumours that Ings could leave Villa Park this January, with the Saints’ seemingly interested in re-signing their former striker despite edging closer to a deal to bring Nicolas Jackson to the club from Villarreal.
Nathan Jones has done well this January to strengthen Southampton’s attacking options with the Senegal international set to join Mislav Orisic this month. However, the former Luton Town boss is keen to add another forward, with Ings now under consideration.
Ings made 100 appearances for Southampton in his three years on the south coast scoring an impressive 46 goals in all competitions as the former Liverpool star established himself as one of the most consistent goalscorers in the Premier League.

However, since signing for Villa in 2021 for a reported £25m, the attacker has seen his playing time and his minutes dry up in the West Midlands, with Ings scoring just 14 goals in 52 appearances, with Unai Emery seemingly open to selling the striker this January.
Indeed, with Southampton in a relegation battle, bringing Ings back to the south coast be quite the power play from Jones, with the forward a player who knows what it takes to play for the club and to get supporters back on their feet after a dismal season so far.
Southampton signing Ings would be an inspired move from Jones

With three wins on the spin, things are starting to look up for Jones after a dreadful start to life as manager of Southampton. And with two signings now through the front door, adding a third in Ings could be a great move from the Saints boss.
After all, Southampton can do with some extra firepower. And turning to their former striker who bagged more or less a goal every other game will greatly help Jones in his quest to get the Saints back the Premier League standings and into a safe position.
