West Ham United are now showing an interest in a January transfer for Manchester United star Harry Maguire. A deal can unite the defender with his England teammate, Declan Rice.

That is according to the Mirror, which reports the Irons are considering a move for the Red Devils captain. Hammers boss David Moyes is keen to improve his defensive options during the winter market. But the Scot is still to decide whether to target experience or potential.

Moyes believes West Ham must sign a centre-half in January as Craig Dawson is pushing to leave the claret-and-blue club. He is desperate to return to the Midlands but would leave a void at the London Stadium. So, the Irons are weighing up a move to sign Maguire on loan.

Maguire has fallen majorly out of favour since Erik ten Hag took charge at Old Trafford. He is effectively the Dutchman’s fourth-choice option having only featured for 383 minutes across eight Premier League appearances. The 29-year-old has also only started in four matches.

Ten Hag has further only fielded the 53-cap enforcer, who shone for England at the World Cup, for 711 minutes during his 15 appearances across all competitions. Now, Manchester United are ready to cut their losses on the defender in the summer at a ‘considerable loss’.

Rice has unwavering support for West Ham’s new transfer target, Maguire

Manchester United bankrolled an £80m swoop to sign Maguire under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Leicester City in August 2019. He became the most expensive defender in the world at the time, too. While the Red Devils gave him a contract worth £200k-a-week to June 2025.

But Maguire’s performances fell away from the heights that allowed the Foxes to set their price tag so high. Yet he showed at the World Cup that the Sheffield native can still deliver having been one of England’s most reliable operators in Qatar with a raft of superb games.

Moyes, clearly, also still admires what Maguire can offer as West Ham show an interest in his loan transfer from Manchester United. While Hammers captain Rice also declared his unwavering support after the centre-back was booed at Wembley against the Ivory Coast.

“Total embarrassment from whoever booed,” Rice shared on Twitter last March. “Maguire has been incredible every single time he’s put on the England shirt. Absolute nonsense it is becoming. Back your own players. Especially with a major tournament coming up.”
