According to The Telegraph, Conor Gallagher is now wanted by Newcastle United.

The Chelsea midfielder is one of three players from the Blues that Newcastle are now targeting alongside Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hakim Ziyech.

This is a transfer that has been in the pipeline for a little while now. The Magpies were linked with Gallagher over the summer, but the story here goes way back to when PIF originally bought the Tyneside club.

Indeed, when PIF originally bought Newcastle, Gallagher was genuinely one of the first players that Rio Ferdinand told Newcastle to go out and sign.

Ferdinand told Newcastle to sign Gallagher

The pundit told Newcastle to sign Gallagher in late 2021.

“Do you know who I would go and get now as well,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. “I would be going mad for young English talent. The best young English talent.”

“Max Aarons, right-back at Norwich, he is an (England) U21 player. Conor Gallagher, straight in there. Get him in.”

“They are two names, straightaway, who I would say they are coming to Newcastle. I want young English talent, we are an English club.”

Good idea

Ferdinand had the right idea when it came to signing English talent at Newcastle.

Nick Pope, Dan Burn and Matt Targett have been amongst the Magpies three best signings, and Gallagher could well follow suit.

A young, hungry player with a point to prove in the Premier League, Gallagher would fit in at Newcastle like a glove.

The suggestion of signing Max Aarons hasn’t aged too well, but given his performances for Crystal Palace last season, there’s reason to believe that Gallagher could be a bona fide star at Newcastle if he made the move to the north east.
