Italian outlet TMW claim Everton have opened talks to sign Bologna attacker Marko Arnautovic this month, after the Austria star almost joined Manchester United in the summer – only for Erik ten Hag’s side to pull out of a transfer.

Arnautovic, 33, returned to European football from China in the summer of 2021. He joined Serie A side Bologna, and has since been incredible. Clocking up 50 appearances for Bologna, he has scored almost one goal every two games.

This is in a side that currently sit 11th place, and finished in 13th last term. Sky Sports report that Manchester United almost signed the 106-time international in the summer for £7.6m. But, backlash from fans prevented a transfer.

He has remained at Bologna and has scored eight goals in 14 Serie A games. Everton have opened talks to bring the veteran striker to Goodison Park this month. It is unclear if it will be an initial loan, or a permanent deal for Arnautovic.

The Toffees do have options up top. Dom Calvert-Lewin is back from injury, which is a massive boost for the Toffees. But how long can they give him to get back to his best? Everton are in a relegation dogfight now. They need results.

Neal Maupay has struggled since his move from Brighton. A bit of experience in the final third, a bit of venom – a player that is similar to Richarlison – would be ideal. Arnautovic is just that. He can do a bit of everything in attack.

In terms of position – striker, either flank, as a 10. But also, he is good with the ball at his feet, in the air, cutting inside, holding the ball up and even from set-pieces. He has a contract at Bologna until the summer until June 2025.
