Kaoru Mitoma impressed once again on the weekend as Brighton swept Liverpool aside to win 3-0 and Alan Shearer has applauded the Japan star – a player that is interesting Arsenal after the Gunners missed out on Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Mitoma, 25, joined Brighton for a fee of just £2.5million in the summer of 2021. Playing 62 times for Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale, Mitoma had a hand in 50 goals – scoring 30, creating 20. He joined Brighton, but was loaned out.

He joined Belgian side Union St. Gilloise. Again, impressing. Eight goals and four assists in 29 games. He has come in at Brighton and sparkled. Mitoma has three Premier League goals in his last five games – four in total in the 22-23 season.

While he did not score in the 3-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday, he gave Trent Alexander-Arnold a torrid time. The Seagulls cruised to a surprise victory, given the margin. Shearer picked the Japanese star in his Team of the Week.

He praised the Brighton star for terrifying the Liverpool defence, on the Premier League’s website on Monday afternoon: “A real threat throughout. He terrified Liverpool, finding space and running at them time and again.”

With Chelsea signing Mudryk for a fee almost reaching as much as £90million, they are left to find an alternative. 90Min report that Arsenal have added Mitoma to their shortlist, though a move is much more likely in the summer.

The Gunners lack cover for Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. However, Emile Smith-Rowe is back in action after an injury lay-off. Reiss Nelson has shown signs of improvement. Brazilian talent Marquinhos has impressed on occasion.

They do need a winger and with the Europa League knockout stages set to take stage next month, the Gunners need cover. Mitoma would be ideal – a player happy to be on the bench, and play here and there. His price tag is unknown.
