The Mail claim Tottenham are monitoring a potential move to sign Brighton star Leandro Trossard with the Belgium international out of contract at the end of the season – but Chelsea are also keen on a reunion with Graham Potter.

Trossard, 28, will see his contract expire come June and that may convince Brighton to sell him this month. Allow him to leave for a cut-price figure and bring in some cash for his signature. That, instead of letting him go for nothing.

The Belgium World Cup winger remained an unused substitute in Brighton’s last outing against Everton, a 4-1 win. In the 5-1 victory over high-flying Championship side Middlesbrough, he was not included in the matchday squad.

The last couple of games will have proved to Brighton and Roberto De Zerbi that Trossard is not indispensable to his side. So, selling him this month, even without getting a replacement in, would not be the end of the world to Brighton.

Spurs, meanwhile, need additions in the final third. Richarlison remains sidelined with an injury and Deki Kulusevski has had a number of injury concerns. Lucas Moura is expected to depart come the end of the season, with his deal ending.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min could do with a rest when possible – even starting against Portsmouth in the FA Cup. So, bringing in another body that can play in a number of positions in the final third makes sense. Trossard is that.

Potentially on the cheap, it would make sense for Spurs to sign a player like Trossard. But, it must be said, he is not the kind of player Antonio Conte likes – in terms of being over six foot. The rules could be bent, given his form this term.

If Brighton are willing to sell Trossard for a cut-price fee, Spurs should take it. He has already scored seven goals from out wide for Brighton. If they cannot get him in January, then a free transfer in the summer would be just as impressive.
