Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips has reported on his Si & Dan Talk Chelsea site that Graham Potter is considering a shock move to sign Aston Villa star Matty Cash – with Reece James likely to return from injury at the end of the month.

Cash, 25, has been one of Aston Villa’s best players since he joined the club from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2020. He has clocked up 85 games in all competitions, having a hand in 10 goals. Solid at the back, potent in attack.

His form has been so good, that Poland fought hard to win his allegiance – and it saw him play at the World Cup in Qatar. Now back at Villa, Cash recently signed a new deal that will see him remain in the Midlands until June 2027.

But not if Chelsea can help it. Phillips reports that Cash is a target for Villa this month – who cost Villa £16million. If Chelsea do enter the bidding for 12-time Poland ace, then it will certainly cost a lot more than their initial outlay.

Chelsea considering shock move to sign Villa star Cash with James injured

Potter’s side lack proper competition for James. The England defender is easily Chelsea’s most-effective player and without him, they do not have any input from right wing-back. Cash would change. His energy, his guile would do so.

Cesar Azpilicueta is a solid option – but not one to get forward and create goals. He is better on the left or the right of a back three. So, having a player like Cash who can get up and down, proven in England, they would be more prolific.

Villa are unlikely to want to sell but every player has his price. Chelsea will have to pay over the odds to get Cash, given his contract is set to last until June 2027. But, Todd Boehly has plenty of cash to spend and so, anything is possible.
