Tottenham have reportedly identified Brentford’s David Raya as the long-term successor to Hugo Lloris, with the Spanish international now a potential signing for the north London side this year.

According to the Telegraph, the 27-year-old is the leading candidate to replace Tottenham’s 36-year-old captain Lloris, though it is expected that any move to sign Raya will come in the summer transfer window despite the Frenchman’s performances being below-par this season.

As per the report, Raya’s contract with Brentford will expire in one year this summer, meaning that Tottenham are in a very strong position to move for the London-based goalkeeper in the post-season, where the Brentford star could realistically move to Spurs.

One of Brentford’s most important players in their Premier League era, Raya has been a reliable figure for the Bees in the past two seasons. Yet with the former Blackburn Rovers star’s contract running out in 18 months, Tottenham could tempt the Barcelona-born shot-stopper to make a London switch in the summer.

Indeed, replacing a player as important to the club and the culture of Tottenham as Lloris will be no small undertaking, with the Frenchman arguably the best goalkeeper to ever play for the north London side in the Premier League era.

However, Raya could be an ideal replacement for Lloris, with the Brentford star established in the English top-flight as well as a goalkeeper who is very much yet to reach his peak, with the Catalan a shot-stopper who can elevate his game if given the chance to play for a big club, such as Tottenham.

Lloris will go down as one of Tottenham’s best-ever players in the 21st century and a captain who led Spurs to their most successful era in the Premier League. And in terms of replacing the Frenchman, Raya ticks a lot of the right boxes that Antonio Conte will be looking for in the market.

The Brentford star is young enough, for a keeper, to keep developing his game at a club like Tottenham whilst also an ideal modern-goalkeeper to take Spurs’ backline into a new era, with Lloris himself a player who would approve of Raya succeeding him at the club.
