Scott McDonald has taken to Twitter to criticise Celtic defender Josip Juranovic after struggling in his first game back against Rangers on Monday at Ibrox – with the linked-away Croatia star being told he looked as if he is still in “Qatar”.

Juranovic, 27, started the game on the bench. But he entered the game early on with Greg Taylor looking as if he has picked up a hamstring injury. Playing on the left, he came up against Fashion Sakala and struggled with his speed.

Linked with a £17million move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and more, Juranovic was poor. Sakala often got the better of him. Ally McCoist was full of criticism for the Celtic man.

Ex-Celtic striker McDonald also criticised the right-back. While he was being asked to play out of position on the left, it is a position he has played in before. The Aussie criticised Juranovic with a five-word verdict: “Juranovic is still in Qatar”.

Juranovic did look rusty. In what was his first game back after Qatar, a bit of sloppiness might have been accepted. Especially, given he played a leading role for Croatia and started every game for the third-placed nation in Qatar.

But looking poor in a game as big as the Old Firm is not the time to do it. With scouts likely to have been watching Juranovic, you would suggest that they might have been deterred after his performance. Not a good display from him.

In a way, not good for Celtic on the transfer market front, either. The Hoops have brought in Alistair Johnson to replace the impending loss of Juranovic. They are preparing to sell Juranovic in the coming weeks – but this will deter interest.
