Liverpool and Newcastle target Enzo Fernandez could now miss Benfica vs Braga on Friday as an exit looks likely.

What’s the story?

Well, that is according to O Jogo in Portugal – via the Mirror – who believe the Argentina international could sit out Benfica’s next match in the Primeira Liga in case he picks up an injury, which would harm any chance of a January exit.

It comes after another Portuguese news outlet in A Bola claimed that Benfica are expecting Newcastle to submit a bid in the region of £106m – which would be enough to trigger the midfielder’s release clause.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Fernandez, even before he won the Silver Ball in Qatar – given to the best young player at the tournament – as Argentina lifted their third World Cup.

Since the World Cup finished, talk of a move for the 21-year-old has seriously intensified, with many of Europe’s elite clubs desperate to secure his signature.

Record in Portugal even claimed that Jürgen Klopp had convinced Fernandez to join Liverpool.

However, nothing was said about Liverpool satisfying Benfica’s demands, although as aforesaid, the Portuguese giants are now fearful of Newcastle triggering their No.13’s £106m release clause.

Fernandez scored one goal and provided one assist in seven appearances for Argentina at the World Cup.

In 24 outings for Benfica this season, the South American has scored three goals and set up a further five.

Liverpool must react as Newcastle prepare bid

In our view, it is now or never for Liverpool in the race to sign Fernandez, if A Bola‘s claim about Newcastle being ready to trigger his release clause is true.

Whoever wins the race for the Argentine will surely lock him into a lengthy contract, and it could be his last move for a very long time.

Therefore, if Liverpool are convinced Fernandez is the man they need, they must also trigger his release clause should Newcastle do the same.

As aforesaid, Klopp has already – allegedly – convinced him to join, so personal terms should not be an issue, especially as they can offer the South American Champions League football, which Newcastle cannot.

Liverpool just need to satisfy Benfica’s financial demands, so keep an eye on this situation to see who makes the first offer.
