Eric Dier is probably breathing a sigh of relief today after Tottenham Hotspur’s comeback on Boxing Day.

Two goals down away to Brentford, the Lilywhites fought back to earn a hard-fought point in a pulsating 2-2 draw yesterday afternoon.

Goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saved Tottenham, in the end.

An Ivan Toney goal saw Antonio Conte’s side go 2-0 down early in the second half following a botched clearance from Dier – which conceded the corner – and general mayhem in the Lilywhites’ defence.

And here’s how James McFadden saw it, labelling it as ‘shocking’.

He said to BBC Radio 5 Live: “The clearance is shocking from Eric Dier, he can’t control it, but these things happen. It is the defensive organisation from Tottenham that is really shocking. No-one picks up Ivan Toney. He is a striker and has that instinct to make the run and tuck it away, but the organisation from Tottenham is shocking.”

Tottenham need Cristian Romero back – and fast.

The Argentina international won a World Cup nine days ago and therefore has only recently returned to North London.

The visit of Aston Villa on New Year’s Day should, in theory, represent a viable comeback date for the South American – and boy does Conte need him.

Without him in defence, Tottenham are markedly less stable and his return will be a welcome one.
