Wolves are set to sign Matheus Cunha and have been handed a boost in pursuit of the Brazilian’s Atletico Madrid team-mate Felipe too, Goal reporting that the Premier League-linked defender wants to stay in Europe.

Between them, Cunha and Felipe have started just four La Liga games under Diego Simeone this season. No wonder futures are being considered and lockers are being cleared out at the Wanda Metropolitano; both players receiving their fair of offers from clubs willing to offer more regular first-team football.

Fabrizio Romano, on Tuesday night, uttered those three immortal words. Cunha to Wolves; ‘here we go’. After missing out on a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad, the former RB Leipzig forward is heading to Molineux on a loan-to-buy deal worth around £45 million.

Negotiations with fellow Brazilian Felipe are not quite at such an advanced stage. But with the veteran centre-back rebuffing the advances of Sao Paulo and Atletico Paranaense – his preference is to stay this side of the Athletic – Wolves’ pursuit of Felipe appears to have been handed a timely boost heading into Christmas.

Wolves like Felipe and will sign his Atletico Madrid team-mate Matheus Cunha

The one-time £15 million Porto stopper, Goal add, hopes to continue playing at the very highest level, despite turning 33 in May. A La Liga champion in 2021; Felipe is also unwilling to reduce his wages to the point that clubs in Brazil could afford him.

“Both Cunha and Felipe are options to sign in the January transfer window,” Lopetegui admitted a few weeks back. “We like them. The reality is that we have to reinforce the team in different positions.”

Felipe picked up league winners’ medals in Brazil and Portugal, as well as Spain. He would add some useful experience to a rather callow Wolves backline. The Premier League’s bottom club said farewell to two of their most battle-scarred soldiers last summer; Conor Coady joining Everton and Romain Saiss heading to Turkey with Besiktas.

Wolves are reportedly keeping tabs on Osasuna’s David Garcia too. Real Valladolid duo Ivan Fresneda and Javi Sanchez are also on Lopetegui’s wishlist.
