Ian Wright bigged up Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Alexis Mac Allister during Argentina’s sensational penalty shootout victory over France in the World Cup final on Sunday.

The Highbury legend stated that Mac Allister’s assist for Angel di Maria was ‘underrated’ as Argentina went 2-0 ahead, at that time.

Not many expected the game to unfold in the manner it did because, it seemed as if those virus-stricken France players were going to head home without hardly throwing a punch.

But when you have someone of Mbappe’s power and skill, then anything is possible, as a routine 2-0 victory exploded into utter chaos and a 3-3 draw after extra-time.

Mac Allister was subbed off just before the penalties were taken, with Wright being impressed by the second goal the South American giants scored, as he told ITV Sport.

“It’s come from hard work,” said Wright. “Once (Emi) Martinez kicks it, Alvarez is not given his opponent any time and there is a poor touch.

“Messi’s touch was fantastic (in the build-up to Argentina’s second goal). Then this is underrated. This pass (from Mac Allister to di Maria) has to be perfect, with the weight, then di Maria comes in. It’s a fantastic goal. It’s beautiful to watch.”

MAC ALLISTER’S STOCK RISING

The 23-year-old only has 14 Argentina caps to his name, yet he already has secured a World Cup medal.

Whilst the likes of Lionel Messi and even Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez take the spotlight after that historic night in Doha.

Someone like Mac Allister returns to Brighton as the unsung hero of this Argentina World Cup win because he has been outstanding all tournament long.

There is Premier League interest in the player, with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham being keen, but after being benched for the opening game defeat to Saudi Arabia, Mac Allister has taken his chance since then and now he is a national hero.
