As Emiliano Martinez finds himself on the brink of winning the World Cup with Argentina, several fans have wondered why he is called “Dibu.”

Why is Emiliano Martinez called ‘Dibu’?

Journalist Luis Mazariegos has the answer.

Mazariegos has claimed that during his early days at Independiente, Emiliano Martinez was likened to a cartoon character, ‘Dibu’ (short for Dibujo) on popular show, “Mi familia es un Dibujo.”

It has been claimed that the Argentina No.1 had freckles as a child, much like the animated character, which is why he is referred to by the nickname, especially within Lionel Scaloni’s dressing room.

How has he performed for Argentina at the World Cup?

The Aston Villa goalkeeper has been key to Lionel Messi and Co. now being one step closer to triumphing on football’s biggest stage for the first time since 1986.

The ex-Arsenal man has made some clutch saves this tournament, especially against the Netherlands in his nation’s dramatic penalty shootout win.

Much like he did against Colombia in the Copa America semi-final, Martinez seems to be an expert during shootout situations.

Penalties in general, as he saved Bruno Fernandes’ last-minute spot-kick against Manchester United last season and proceeded to famously taunt him.

Emiliano Martinez, or Dibu is also a leader at the back for Argentina and barks orders constantly towards his teammates to ensure their heads are in the game.

Against a frighteningly good French attack, the FA Cup winner will have to be at his brilliant best to ensure his country win the World Cup final.
