The Chronicle report Leicester City star James Maddison has been told what an “exciting project” Newcastle United is at the moment by his England teammates, while in Qatar, having come close to joining the Toon in the summer.
Maddison, 26, has spent the past month with England in Qatar – but failed to play a single minute for Gareth Southgate’s men. He missed the first two games with an injury – remaining an unused sub for the next three games.
His form in 2022-23 has been astounding. Following on from his wonderful stats last season, in which he had a hand in 30 goals – he has seven goals this season, along with four assists in 13 Premier League appearances.
Long-linked with a move north, The Chronicle say Maddison was the subject of a £50million move to Newcastle. A move fell through, but now, he has been told by his England teammates of what an ‘exciting project’ Newcastle is.

Maddison is a top, top player. Newcastle are keen. It is clear that Eddie Howe wants a 10 to play behind either Alex Isak or Callum Wilson. Maddison would be perfect. Not only does he fit the bill, but he improves this Newcastle side.
He fits the transfer criteria, too. Newcastle brought in players in January that would keep them up. Now safe, and more than safe, they are looking at players that take the project forward. Sven Botman and Isak, for example.
Maddison, still only 25, is that. He can be the heartbeat of their attack for the next six or seven years, he is that good. Even if Newcastle start competing in the Champions League and for titles, Maddison will remain crucial.
If a deal can be done for £50million come the January window, Newcastle have got to take advantage and bring him to the club. If they have to wait until the summer, then, again, they must do so. He is perfect for Howe’s side.
