Dean Jones claims Tottenham have added Everton and Aston Villa goalkeepers Emi Martinez and Jordan Pickford to their shortlist to replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks – with Martinez set to take on Lloris in the World Cup final.

Lloris, who turns 36 later this month, could be about to celebrate an early birthday present by holding aloft his second World Cup. A second in two years. A potentially huge achievement – all while his long-term Spurs future is in doubt.

The France skipper is about to enter the last 18 months of his contract and at almost 36, Spurs need to start drawing up a contingency plan of his replacements. It seems, they are already doing that, according to transfer expert Jones.

He has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham are considering the goalkeeper that he will stand opposite him in the World Cup final. Villa’s ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, Martinez. Not only Martinez, but also, England no.1 and Everton ace, Pickford.

“A very interesting position at Spurs going forward. I do think they’re keeping an eye on the Pickford situation. I’m pretty sure they’re also looking at Emi Martinez and whether he might consider a move at the end of the season.”

Tottenham have added Martinez and Pickford to their shortlist

Spurs need a new goalkeeper. Most likely, they will make their move at the end of the season. Lloris will have entered the final year of his deal. Whether he will remain at Spurs as a no.2, or leave – time will tell. But a new no.1 is needed.

Antonio Conte’s side could do a whole lot worse than trying to sign Pickford, or Martinez. Both playing at big clubs, but capable of playing in a Champions League side. Villa have the cash to try and reach that level, or at least, Europe.

That may keep Martinez happy at Villa. Everton do not have that in the bank and realistically, Pickford has start to outgrow Everton – especially, considering his form for England. Tottenham have a real chance of nabbing either.
