Luka Modric has named Argentina captain Lionel Messi as the GOAT instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Croatia skipper’s statement has come as a surprise, considering he played alongside Ronaldo for 6 years at Real Madrid.
The pair enjoyed a ton of success together, winning three Champions League titles in together.

For years on end, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have gone head-to-head for the title of the greatest footballer of all time.
The legendary pair’s rivalry is one of the sport’s most fiercely-battled competitions the game has ever seen.
And to this day, there are millions across the world that believe either is the best player to ever grace the beautiful game.
However, Messi has the chance to solidify his status as the greatest of all time by winning the World Cup.
Several critics of the Paris Saint-Germain icon believe that due to his failure to lift the elusive competition unlike fellow countryman Diego Maradona, he cannot be classed as the best footballer in history.
Luka Modric feels Argentina talisman Lionel Messi is the GOAT (greatest of all time) ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo
Speaking after Croatia suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Argentina, Luka Modric controversially classed Lionel Messi as the GOAT instead of Cristiano Ronaldo,
“I hope [Messi] wins this World Cup, he is the best player in history and he deserved it”, he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
The enigmatic forward, who was awarded the Man of the Match showed his class in the World Cup semi-final against Modric’s men on Tuesday night, converting an emphatic penalty as well as putting in a sublime assist for Julian Alvarez.
Could Luka Modric be proven right about Lionel Messi?
While many, like Luka Modric believe Argentina star Lionel Messi is already the GOAT instead of Cristiano Ronaldo, a World Cup triumph could end up the never-ending debate once and for all.
After all, Messi and his Argentina side find themselves in the final of the competition.
Awaiting the winner of the semi-final between France and Morocco, Lionel Messi could prove Luka Modric right by lifting the World Cup trophy at Lusail Stadium on Sunday.
With Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal side exiting the World Cup quarter-final to Morocco in surprise fashion, as well as his spell at Manchester United being forgettable to say the least, the Argentine has the golden opportunity of becoming the clear winner of football’s greatest rivalry.
