Wolves’ pursuit of Atletico Madrid defender Felipe could collapse with Marca reporting that the Brazilian’s move to the Premier League is far from a foregone conclusion.
The transfer market giveth, the transfer market potentially taketh away.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Marca say, are closing in on agreement with Atletico Madrid’s £42 million-rated Brazil international benchwarmer Matheus Cunha. Despite interest from Aston Villa, Everton and Leeds United, Julen Lopetegui’s bottom-of-the-table side look set to complete what could be one of the most exciting and intriguing transfers in the upcoming January window.

Talk about a gamechanger. No team in the Premier League has scored fewer goals than Wolves in 2022/23. And while Cunha is more a scorer of great goals than a great goalscorer, his vision, guile and penchant for the spectacular would certainly give these toothless Wolves some much-needed bite in the final third.
Whether Cunha is joined at Molineux by fellow Brazilian and Wanda Metropolitano team-mate Felipe, however, only time will tell.
Wolves could sign Matheus Cunha but miss out on Atletico Madrid team-mate Felipe
Marca believe that negotiations between Wolves and Felipe could collapse. This follows on from previous reports suggesting that an agreement over a compensation fee was standing in the way of Wolves sealing a deal for the 33-year-old former FC Porto colossus.
Felipe, who joined Atletico in a £15 million deal back in 2020, is out of contract next summer. While hardly a spring chicken, one suspects that the twice-capped Brazilian will have plenty of other offers at his disposal if talks with Wolves break down.
He is, after all, brimming with top-level experience. Not to mention a league champion in three different countries; Spain, Portugal and Brazil. There is, Marca adds, still ‘optimism’ that an agreement will be reached with Wolves. And there is plenty of time on their side too. The winter window doesn’t even opening for another few weeks.
Lopetegui has already confirmed his interest in bringing both Cunha and Felipe to Molineux. The Spaniard is also full of praise for the £12 million-rated Argentina international Marcos Acuna; another linked with a move to the Black Country in the New Year.
“Both (Matheus) Cunha and Felipe are options to sign in the January transfer window,” Lopetegui explains. “We like them. We are opening up different options. Because the reality is that we have to reinforce the team in different positions.
“(Acuna is also) a player that I like. But we will see what happens.”
