The race for the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot is over, with Kylian Mbappe reigning supreme over Lionel Messi and Olivier Giroud in Qatar, as well as Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez emerged as a late contender for the prize after his brace in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Croatia in the semi-final, but Mbappe’s phenomenal hattrick in the final secured his first World Cup Golden Boot in the most dramatic of circumstances.

It was Harry Kane who lifted the last World Cup Golden Boot after scoring six goals in Russia back in 2018, with the England international achieving the feat in just six appearances.

Well, Messi led the way with six goals in seven games for Argentina in Qatar after opening the scoring in the final, before adding a seventh in extra-time to put Argentina 3-2 up.

The PSG No.30 also provided three assists for his country.

However, as aforesaid, Mbappe leapfrogged his PSG teammate with a remarkable hattrick in the final.

In total, the PSG No.7 scored eight goals in seven games, along with two assists.

Messi would have scored one more, had Wojciech Szczesny not saved his penalty in the 2-0 win over Poland in Group C.

Liverpool want to sign Golden Boot winner Mbappe

Interestingly, Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Mbappe amid talk of the France international being unhappy at PSG.

A number of French news outlets reported the rumour – including respected journalist Julien Laurens – with El Pais even claiming that Mbappe’s uncle has advised him to make Anfield his next destination.

Marca in Spain add that Liverpool would be alert to the situation if an opportunity to sign the 23-year-old arose.

Keep an eye on that situation, as anything could happen in 2023.
