Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte wants to bring former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next summer when his current contract at AS Roma runs out, according to CMW.

The Italian news outlet have claimed that Tottenham will compete with Juentus and Inter Milan for Smalling in the summer of 2023.

Conte wants to sign Inter centre-back Stefan de Vrij, but the former Chelsea boss has an eye on Smalling as well, according to the report.

Could Chris Smalling end up at Tottenham Hotspur?

In our opinion, it is unlikely that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will sanction a deal for former Manchester United central defender Chris Smalling next summer.

Yes, Smalling has done well for Roma since joining the Italian club from United, first on loan and then on a permanent basis for £18 million (Sky Sports).

However, the Englishman is 33 now.

True, the former Fulham defender will become a free agent next summer, but if Tottenham finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season, then they will surely aim for better and younger centre-backs and build for the future.

Tottenham did sign wing-back Ivan Perisic on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, but he is a specialist player in a specialist position for Conte.
