As reported by 90 Min, Newcastle United are assessing their finances in order to pull off a deal for England star James Maddison in January.

Newcastle could try to pull off Maddison deal at the start of 2023

The report states that the Magpies are interested in getting the deal for the Leicester City midfielder over the line at the start of the new year.

However, it has been claimed that the Magpies remain unsure about whether they can ensure the blockbuster addition is made.

With a price tag of £50 million quoted for the in-form Maddison in January, the club believe the transfer is a lot more doable in the summer.

Eddie Howe must be keen on the switch, as his main focus remains to capitalise on the incredible progress made by his side this season.

The English tactician hopes to be handed sufficient funds to get his transfer targets at Newcastle, as his aim is to ensure the club secure European qualification.

Sitting in 3rd place in the Premier League, just 3 points behind the mighty Manchester City, the goal isn’t as far-fetched as it may seem to some.

However, Howe is aware that the transfer budget in January may be limited, considering the club spent a combined £98 million to sign Alexander Isak (£63 million, as per Sky Sports) and Sven Botman (£35 million, according to Sky Sports).

Newcastle should splash the cash on Maddison

Newcastle United find themselves in dreamland, sitting as high as in 3rd place in the Premier League so far.

With Chelsea starting the season in shocking fashion, Manchester United still setting to life under Erik ten Hag, Liverpool being a mixed bag and Tottenham struggling to convince, the top four race is wide open.

Bringing in a player of the England international’s quality, albeit at a premium price in January would well and truly boost their chances of not just Europa League football, but playing in the Champions League in 2023.

For context, James Maddison has 11 goal involvements (7 goals and 4 assists) in the Premier League this season, only 1 behind Kevin De Bruyne with 12 (3 goals and 9 assists) for a struggling Foxes side, which shows the caliber at which he is operating currently.
