Edin Dzeko is reportedly close to signing a new contract with Inter Milan amid reports that Tottenham are interested in signing the 36-year-old striker in January.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri are on the verge of a full agreement for Dzeko to extend his stay at the San Siro club, with the attacker set to sign a new 18-month contract in January that will keep the forward committed to Inter until 2024.
Dzeko’s current contract, worth a reported £100,000-a-week, was due to expire next summer. However, the veteran attacker will now remain in Italy for one extra year as the Bosnian superstar continues to defy all expectations during his time in Serie A.
The striker has been in excellent form for Inter this season, outscoring both Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez. And as a result, CalcioMercatoWeb reported that Antonio Conte was interested in signing Dzeko as a backup for Harry Kane as well as a potential replacement for the England international.

However, as we now know, a return to the Premier League won’t be happening for Dzeko at this stage of his career, with the striker set to sign what could be the final contract of his illustrious career with Inter, with Tottenham now having to return to the drawing board for a new striking target.
Indeed, Dzeko would have been an unpopular signing anyway given the forward’s age and previous links to Manchester City. And for Conte, the attacker signing a new deal will give the Italian an excuse to look for a more suitable option in January.
Dzeko signing new Inter contract is a blessing in disguise

Dzeko’s record this season has been impressive despite the forward’s age. Yet for Tottenham, the attacker signing a new deal with Inter could be a blessing in disguise as it will allow Conte and his transfer team to find a more suitable alternative for Spurs’ future.
After all, a backup for Kane who is younger than the England captain might be for the best in the long-term rather than Tottenham going all-out for a striker well into the twilight of their career, with Dzeko a player who might have been a poor fit for Spurs in hindsight.
