Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed that Virgil van Dijk will go down in history as one of the greatest defenders of all time.
Since joining Liverpool in 2018, the Dutchman has been hailed as the best centre-back in world football by many.
The former Southampton colossus is often put in and amongst the conversation as the best defender in Premier League history.
In 2020, Man City legend Vincent Kompany told Football Focus that van Dijk was already the greatest-ever defender in the history of the English game.
Alexander-Arnold says van Dijk will go down in history as one of the greatest

However, Trent Alexander-Arnold has gone as far as to say that Virgil van Dijk will be remembered as one of the greatest defenders of all time, whilst picking his dream five-a-side team from all the players at the World Cup.
“I don’t want to be cliché and just go for a Liverpool teammate but I have to go with Virg. I have to”, he said on talkSPORT.
Alexander-Arnold continued, “For me, the best defender in the world and will go down in history as one of the best. One of them.”
“I would say he’s the most talented player I’ve shared the pitch with. He’s that good.”
Virgil van Dijk’s lack of longevity may come back to bite him in all-time conversations
Yes, van Dijk has largely been the best defender in world football since joining Jurgen Klopp’s side.
However, it must be said that the Dutch international’s time at the top has been short-lived.
Especially considering he joined the club in 2018, spent a chunk of the 2020/2021 campaign injured and has been shaky for the most part this season.
While Trent Alexander-Arnold is right in heaping praise on the great Virgil van Dijk, to say he will go down as the best defenders in the history of the game may not go down the best with many.
