Cody Gakpo has been one of the stories of the World Cup so far, with the Netherlands already booking their place in the quarter-finals – and Virgil van Dijk has heaped praise on the Liverpool and Manchester United transfer target.

Gakpo, 23, was 0.1% away from joining Leeds United in the summer – but a move fell through. He remained at PSV Eindhoven and has taken his form to a whole new level, having a hand in 30 goals during 24 games this season.

That form has continued for Oranje. A goal in each of his country’s group games in Qatar, a perfect hat-trick. Little surprise then that Liverpool and Manchester United want him, according to Voetbal International’s Marco Timmer.

Real Madrid are also said to be in the mix for Gakpo. So, the cream of the crop are pushing for Gakpo – and van Dijk was asked about his teammate’s future. He teased United, saying Madrid would be a better move for the Reds target.

“With all due respect, are Man Utd and Real Madrid on the same level? He is definitely ready for the next step. I also think it can happen. Time will tell. Great kid. Works hard, very talented,” van Dijk said, as per Football Oranje.

What a signing Gakpo would be. At this point, and the form he is showing, he would be a wonderful signing for any club in world football. Even if he would not start initially for the likes of Liverpool or United, he would in the future.

An incredible talent, that has a bit of everything. All at the age of just 23. Rated at £45million, he would be expensive but in this day and age, he is hardly a huge outlay. It is incredible that United paid almost double on Antony.
