La Liga giants Atletico Madrid believe that it would make sense to cash in on Matheus Cunha as Wolves close in on a deal to bring the £22 million Brazil international to the Premier League, according to AS

Talk about an early Christmas present.

If Wolverhampton Wanderers need a goalscorer – and they most certainly do – then their prayers might just be answered. Cunha, Cadena Ser reports, could become Julen Lopetegui’s first signing at Molineux; a goal-shy Wolves side set to bring in an exciting, 23-year-old forward capped eight times by the Brazilian national team.

Cunha, once of RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin, has started just two La Liga matches this season. And, according to AS, a cash-strapped Atletico Madrid side hoping to raise funds in the January window have identified the one-time Manchester United as one of their most sellable assets, Cunha’s lack of regular game-time under Diego Simeone earning him ‘sacrificial lamb’ status.

There’s an acceptance at the Wanda Metropolitano that, if anyone must be said, it makes sense to cash in on the £22 million forward who finds himself stuck well down Simeone’s pecking order.

Wolves want Matheus Cunha and target Atletico Madrid team-mate Felipe too

“He has a deadly shot. You can never stop him. And he has incredible acceleration,” former Inter Milan ace Paolo Tramezzani once told FCInterNews of Cunha.

“He is an extraordinary boy. A hard worker with a great desire to improve, always focused and on the game. He is very mature from this point of view.

“He could be like Jose Mourinho’s (Samuel) Eto’o at Inter: an all-out striker. Deadly up front, but also one who runs and sacrifices a lot for the team.”

While often a scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer – Cunha’s sublime chip for RB Leipzig earned him the 2019 Bundesliga Goal of the Year award – the former Bundesliga starlet will still be a more-than welcome addition to a Wolves side lacking thrust and creativity in the final third.

“Wolves are discussing details of the official proposal to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid. Talks are already ongoing,” Fabrizio Romano writes on Twitter

“Personal terms would be the next step.”

Wolves, AS add, are also looking to bring in Cunha’s Atletico team-mate Felipe. Also capped by Brazil, the 33-year-old former Porto defender would bring some experience to a backline shorn of veterans Conor Coady and Romain Saiss. Felipe joined the La Liga giants from FC Porto in an £18 million deal three-and-a-half years ago.
