Has an anime adaptation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run been announced and what date could it potentially release?

After arguably the single most frustrating anime release schedule in recent memory, the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean series has finally reached its conclusion on Netflix.

The OTT streaming giant released episodes 25-39 of the Stone Ocean anime on December 1, bringing an end to Jolyne Cujoh’s awesome misadventures.

However, fans are now turning their attention to what is potentially next for the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise and specifically, the next possible TV season.

So, has an official announcement confirmed the production of Steel Ball Run, and when could fans see the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime return to their screens?

Has JoJo’s Steel Ball Run anime adaptation been announced?

As of December 2, an anime adaptation of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run series has not been announced by either the original mangaka or associated production teams. However, due to the availability of source material and popularity of the wider franchise, fans can expect Steel Ball Run to grace our screens at some point in the future.

An important note off the top is that the decision to produce another JoJo season is not down to Netflix, as the streaming giant only licenses the anime for international distribution. The decision will ultimately come down to David Productions and author Hirohiko Araki.

The good news is that director Naokatsu Tsuda has already previously noted that he would like to adapt all available parts of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga; there are eight parts as of December 2022:

  • Part 1: Phantom Blood (1987-1988)
  • Part 2: Battle Tendency (1988-1989)
  • Part 3: Stardust Crusaders (1989-1992)
  • Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable (1992-1996)
  • Part 5: Golden Wind (1996-1999)
  • Part 6: Stone Ocean (2000-2003)
  • Part 7: Steel Ball Run (2004-2011)
  • Part 8: JoJolion (2011-2021)

More good news is that reports began circulating online that Steel Ball Run had its patent submitted on the same day as Stone Ocean in 2021; indicating that a plan for the anime has already been put into motion.

What we can say for certain, is that the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series is easily popular enough to warrant another TV anime season. The recently-concluded Stone Ocean series has scored an 8.2/10 on IMDB, with scores of 8.26/10, 8.19/10, and 8.99/10 seen across the three parts on MyAnimeList. You can find more information here.

“Set in the United States in 1890, the story follows Johnny Joestar, a paraplegic ex-jockey, and Gyro Zeppeli, master in a mystic art named the Spin, as they compete with a vast number of others in the Steel Ball Run race: a mad-dash across America for a grand prize of 50 million dollars.” – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run summary, via Fandom.

So, what date could Steel Ball Run potentially premiere around the world?

When could JoJo’s Steel Ball Run anime release?

A specific release date for the Steel Ball Run anime has not been revealed as the anime series’ production remains TBA. However, the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime has made a habit of releasing new seasons every two years:

  • Season 1: Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency (2012-2013)
  • Season 2: Stardust Crusaders (2014-2015)
  • Season 3: Diamond Is Unbreakable (2016)
  • Season 4: Golden Wind (2018-2019)
  • Season 5: Stone Ocean (2021-2022)

As noted by Anime Geek, David Productions will be fairly busy in 2023 as it stands, with Fire Force season 3, Lum The Invader Girl, and Undead Unlock.

Under the assumption that David Production will aim to continue this approximated two-year release schedule, fans can expect Steel Ball Run to premiere in either late 2024 or early 2025.

If this is the case, keep an eye out for an early announcement post throughout the 2023 Winter slate.
