Contract talks between Nacho Fernandez and Real Madrid have broken down amid reports linking the Spain international with a move to Premier League duo Aston Villa and Wolves, according to Marca.
Now, Nacho has never really been an automatic pick in the Los Blancos XI. Think of him as, say, Real Madrid’s answer to John O’Shea.
A highly-versatile, highly-useful squad member; a player who, while far from the most naturally gifted cog in a star-studded machine, can always be relied upon to step in and ‘do a job’ when required. In multiple positions, too.

But, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2023, Nacho will know that, unless he leaves the Santiago Bernabeu sooner rather than later, the chance to play week-in, week-out – while trying his hand in a new competition – will pass him by.
Aston Villa and Wolves want Nacho Fernandez of Real Madrid
According to Sport, Unai Emery is keen secure the services of his one-time Villarreal target at his current employers. Aston Villa are willing to offer Nacho a fresh start, even as he approaches his 33rd birthday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers is another potential destination (AS). Julen Lopetegui worked with the five-time Champions League winner during his short-lived spell in charge of the Spanish giants.
Marca, meanwhile, say that Real Madrid are hoping to retain one of their longest-serving players, with Carlo Ancelotti a keen admirer of the defender’s consistency and versatility. Nacho, however, currently has no plans to extend his contract. He is reportedly unhappy with his reduced role Real Madrid’s plans; the arrival of Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea forcing him even further down the pecking order.
Nacho has started just one La Liga match in 2022/23. In all competitions, he has been included in Ancelotti’s XI on just seven occasions.
In addition to those five Champions League winners’ medals, Nacho has also picked up three La Liga titles, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, three Supercopas de Espana and a single Copa del Rey crown.
Always underrated but, at Real Madrid, never underappreciated.
