Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United may not be able to afford to sign Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur target James Maddison from Leicester City in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
The report published this morning has claimed that Newcastle remain interested in signing Maddison from Premier League rivals Leicester, having wanted to bring him to St. James’ Park in the summer of 2022.
However, according to the report, the Foxes’s ‘asking price means a mid-season deal is probably unworkable’ for Newcastle owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
The report does not mention just how much Leicester want for the England international attacking midfielder, described as “amazing” by Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount on talkSPORT this month.

Newcastle stance on James Maddison a boost for Tottenham and Chelsea
This will come as a boost for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, who have also been linked with Maddison.
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs told GiveMeSport this week that London clubs Chelsea and Tottenham are keen on Maddison, who is leaning towards staying at Leicester until the end of the season before making a decision on his future.
Maddison has scored seven goals and given four assists in 13 Premier League matches for Leicester so far this season and is part of the England squad at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
