Jermaine Jenas was vastly impressed with defender Josko Gvardiol on Thursday evening during commentary on BBC Sport’s coverage of Croatia drawing 0-0 with Belgium – amid reports that Tottenham and Chelsea are keen to sign him.

Gvardiol, 20, won his 15th cap for Croatia in Qatar on Thursday afternoon. The left-footed centre-back partnered Dejan Lovren at the back and helped Croatia keep a second clean sheet in their three group games – nullifying Belgium.

The centre-back has been constantly linked with Tottenham of late, while Chelsea also want him. According to TMW, Tottenham star Ivan Perisic is trying to convince Gvardiol to join Spurs. Simon Phillips say he is keen on joining Chelsea.

The Guardian report that Gvardiol has a release clause in his contract worth £44million. Judging by his showing, that would be a bargain. His best moment came late on, a perfectly-timed flick to deny Romelu Lukaku a certain goal.

Jenas raved about Gvardiol: “He’s been solid. He’s got it all, when he comes out with the ball, he has the ability to go past people, drive into midfield, hits good passes, defends properly. He’s been brilliant, 20 years old; different class.”

Jenas impressed with Gvardiol amid Tottenham and Chelsea reports

Gvardiol was in stunning form. Had it not been for Luka Modric, he would have easily won the man-of-the-match award. Absolutely superb at the back. His passing, his dribbling and driving into midfield – and his defending, amazing.

Which club would be best for Gvardiol? Both clubs have plenty of options in the middle of the defence and ultimately, both clubs are in a similar position. Good enough to finish third or fourth. A move may depend on who gets top four.

A £44million fee is certainly affordable for both clubs. An interesting race will hot up given his release clause – and one that will surely attract more clubs between now and the end of the World Cup.
