AS Roma are reportedly interested in signing Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu, with Tottenham also believed to be interested in the Turkish international.

According to CalcioMercato, Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in one central defender in the January transfer market, with Soyuncu emerging as a strong candidate for the Portuguese manager, with Tottenham being linked with a move for the Leicester defender during the summer.

The Daily Mail reported that Antonio Conte’s side were keeping tabs on Soyuncu over the summer, with Leicester even putting their £19m signing up for sale at one point as the Foxes looked to offload the defender in what was a rough transfer window for Brendan Rodgers.

And now, it appears that its Roma’s turn to try and sign Soyuncu, with the defender himself likely to jump at the chance to join Mourinho in Italy given how poor Leicester have been this season and the opportunity to once again play in Europe presenting itself.

Hailed as ‘very, very quick’ by Rio Ferdinand, the 26-year-old defender has hardly played this season following the drama over the summer window. And with Roma now keen on signing Soyuncu, a deal could soon be over the line to end the centre-back’s recent nightmare at the King Power Stadium.

As for Tottenham, Conte and Fabio Paratici will hardly be losing sleep over Mourinho winning the race to sign Soyuncu, with a move to Serie A with Roma arguably the best move for the defender’s career as well as a transfer that suits all parties involved.

Roma signing Soyuncu shouldn’t bother Tottenham at this stage

Tottenham’s need for an extra centre-back is clear for many to see. However, Soyuncu is hardly the answer given how little the Turkish international has played this season and with Roma now leading the chase to sign the Leicester outcast.

Moreover, if reports are to indicate anything, Tottenham are looking for a younger centre-back to develop alongside Cristian Romero, and Soyuncu is a player who simply doesn’t fit this profile, with a move to Roma arguably the best move the Premier League defender can make at this stage of his career.
