Move over Wenclair shippers, there’s another Wednesday duo fans are going wild for and it’s whether Jenna Ortega and Gwendoline Christie actually married.
Since the release of Wednesday on Netflix on November 23, it has quickly become one of the streaming platform’s most talked-about shows. With Tim Burton at the helm and an all-star cast of celebrated actors and rising stars, it’s not hard to see why.
As part of the press tour for Netflix’s Wednesday, Jenna Ortega (who plays the titular star) and Gwendoline Christie (Principal Weems) have been doing interviews together. In one particular interview at Comic-Con, a comment made by 20-year-old Ortega has some fans thinking she is married to Gwendoline Christie.
Jenna Ortega calls Gwendoline Christie her ‘wife’
Last month, the Wednesday cast descended on the Big Apple for New York Comic Con, which took place from October 6 – 9, 2022.
In one interview on the day of Comic-Con, Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega touched on her fondness for co-star Gwendoline Christie. Ortega said of the Game of Thrones alum: “My woman, I love you. Sorry, that might be disrespectful but that is my nickname for her because she’s my wife.”
“Sorry, I look at you… and my heart… anyway,” Ortega says smiling and then trails off.

No, Jenna and Gwendoline are not married
Despite Jenna Ortega’s ‘wife’ comment about Gwendoline Christie, the two are not actually married. But they definitely share a fondness for one another. Throughout filming, the two actors became close. Since the release of Wednesday on Netflix, they have shared behind-the-scenes snaps of themselves on and off set.
They have also touched on the relationship their two characters share in Wednesday interviews.
“To take on [Morticia’s] daughter and develop a whole other kind of relationship and its many different weird aspects,” Christie says of her and Ortega’s on-screen dynamic. “Is it maternal, is it parently, is it like a sibling relationship, is it other? And I think throughout the series that does change and alter.”
Gwendoline Christie is not married but in a long-term partnership
While Gwendoline Christie has still yet to tie the knot, she has been in a near-decade-long partnership with British designer Giles Deacon. The pair have been together since 2013 and are based in London, England. They keep their relationship largely out of the spotlight, although Christie has previously touched on their work together.
In a rare interview about their relationship from 2019, Christie revealed that she loved wearing Giles Deacon’s designs. She told Vogue: “I’ve worked with Giles on pieces for me over the years and he just has such an impressive knowledge of design and such rigour and discipline, coupled with this extraordinary, wild imagination.
“It’s amazing to work with someone who knows what your strengths are, who knows how to make you feel confident, who knows how to make you look good.”
That interview followed Christie’s debut as Titania in the Bridge Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for which Deacon had designed the costumes. Deacon and Christie collaborated once again for her costumes as Lucifer in Netflix’s The Sandman.

Inevitably, the electric dynamic on-screen and off between Jenna Ortega and Gwendoline Christie has made them a firm favorite with Wednesday fans.
