Alan Shearer has told BBC One’s coverage of England’s 3-0 win over Wales that the assist produced by Tottenham striker Harry Kane was “quality”, raving about his ability to find the perfect ball in without even having to look across.

Marcus Rashford stole the show with two goals for England. His first, breaking the deadlock with a wonderful free-kick. Phil Foden got England’s second, thanks to a wonderful bit of play from Kane – before Rashford made it three.

At half-time, England were level with Wales – drawing 0-0. But Rashford nabbed the ball with a free-kick 20 yards out, and blasted an effort into the top corner. Moments later, Foden made it two. Kane picked up the ball on the right flank.

With a defender in between him and the penalty area, he got the ball out of his feet before lashing a cross into Foden. A stunning ball in the corridor of uncertainty, but made even more impressive because Kane did not even look.

“What a ball this is. With Kane, he knows. He knows where to put that ball, he doesn’t even have to look. It’s a quality cross. He doesn’t look, not once, because he knows where he would like the ball and puts the ball into that area.”

Kane is beginning to show that he can take the Tottenham-type Kane into a tournament with England. In the past, Gareth Southgate has instructed Kane to stay high. It has seen him drift in and out. At times, he did so at Euro 2020.

But this time around, he is dropping deep and making things happen. That is now three assists in England’s three games, having got two in the win over Iran. While he might not be scoring the goals, he is creating them with aplomb.
