Former Bologna director Walter Sabatini was not surprised to see Japan stun Germany at the Qatar World Cup, singling out the ‘fantastic’ Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu in conversation with Sky Sport Italia.
After arriving at the Serie A club from Belgian football back in 2019, Tomiyasu left such an impression on Sabatini that the then-Bologna talent spotter initially thought that ‘the next four or five players I would sign would be Japanese’.
It wasn’t just Tomiyasu’s ability that caught the eye. The 6ft 2ins defensive colossus is a determined, disciplined character. The sort of versatile team player most managers dream of.

During his time at Arsenal, Tomiyasu has been utilised in a variety of systems and roles by Mikel Arteta and the 24-year-old has never once complained.
Arguably most comfortable at right-back, Tomiyasu slotted in as a left-sided centre-half as Japan came from behind to stun Germany in their Group E opener last week.

“I had a Japanese player who is playing for Arsenal now, Tomiyasu,” recalls Sabatini. “Since I saw him train every day, I thought the next four or five players I’d sign would be Japanese.
“They have an incredible mentality. A great ability to remain focused, and can put into practice what the coach demands from them.
“Tomiyasu had an immediate impact at Bologna despite coming from Belgium. So much so he joined Arsenal for a significant sum.
“He can play in different positions. He is a fantastic player. I believe Japan will do well at the World Cup.”
As you might have guessed, Sabatini’s comments came before Japan’s shock 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica on Sunday. Japan will now need a result against Luis Enrique’s Spain if they are to ensure that famous win over the 2014 World Cup winners does not count for nothing.
Tomiyasu, who was a doubt before the Costa Rica clash due to injury, did not get off the bench as Keysher Fuller curled home a dramatic late winner.
“Tomi has been playing left centre-back for his national team Japan,” Arteta pointed out in October. “When you look at the games, he can play as a left back too. You cannot tell me if he’s a left or right-footed player!”
