According to Dutch outlet, ED, Cody Gakpo’s asking price has, once again, increased.
The Netherlands star is shining in Qatar, netting two goals in two games at the World Cup, and his great showings on the world’s biggest stage have led to PSV rethinking their asking price.
According to this report, PSV now want in excess of €50m for the attacker as the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool circle.
To be honest, even at that price point, Gakpo could end up being a real bargain.
The attacker has not only been starring on the international stage, he’s been ripping it up domestically as well, grabbing nine goals and 12 assists so far this season in the Eredivisie.
If he can carry that sort of form over to the Premier League, he’ll be worth double that €50m asking price in no time at all.
Of course, carrying form over from the Dutch league is easier said than done.
We’ve seen stars come from Holland in the past with the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez shining in England after moving from the Netherlands, but for every star, there is a flop.
Afonso Alves, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Memphis Depay and Vincent Janssen are just a selection of former Eredivisie Golden Boot winners who have struggled in England, and sadly, there is reason to believe that Gakpo could follow in their footsteps.
Spending that much on a player from a lowly league is a gamble, but based on his World Cup showings so far, this is a gamble that could pay off.
Liverpool and Arsenal may want to get involved soon before his asking price increases once again.
