One of the strikers linked with Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United in the summer of 2022 was Bamba Dieng, and he scored for Senegal at the 2022 Qatar Wold Cup on Friday.
Dieng, who was close to moving to Leeds from Marseille in the summer transfer window, featured for Senegal against Qatar in their second Group A game today.
And he scored.
The 22-year-old found the back of the net in the 84th minute after coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute.
Senegal won 3-1 against Qatar.
Praise for Leeds United-linked Bamba Dieng
Former Chelsea, Marseille and Ivory Coast international striker Didier Drogba was following the match for BBC One.
And he was impressed by Dieng.
Drogba said about the the 22-year-old striker: “I really like this player because he plays in France for Marseille. He is not playing a lot, but he had a chance after he came on, and a really good finish.”
On September 1, 2022, Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said on Twitter that he had agreed a deal to sign Dieng from Marseille.

Radrizzani actually asked the Leeds fans to “welcome” the striker.
However, the deal broke down in the final minute, and the Senegal international remained at Marseille.
According to L’Equipe, the striker actually ‘cried with incomprehension and rage’ after his move to Leeds broke down and he was dropped by his team.
Dieng has made one start and five substitute appearances in Ligue 1 for Marseille so far this season.
The Marseille no. 12 has scored one goal in those matches.
