What’s the story?
Well, the 23-year-old only needed to kick the ball long in the 100th minute of Portugal’s clash with Ghana to bring an end to the game, and seal a 3-2 win for his country after goals from Ronaldo, Joao Felix and Rafael Leao.
However, Costa decided to roll the ball on the ground before taking his kick, without realising that Inaki Williams was lurking behind him.
The Athletic Bilbao forward robbed the Tottenham and Newcastle target of the ball, leaving Ronaldo panicking on the sideline, only to slip at the vital moment and allow Portugal to get away with all three points in dramatic fashion.
You can see footage of the incredible moment below.
If Tottenham and Newcastle scouts were watching Costa in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana, they will have surely been left baffled by his moment of madness, which so nearly cost his country on the biggest stage.
Tottenham & Newcastle won’t be convinced
Costa has been one of the best goalkeepers in Europe so far this season, although he certainly wouldn’t have convinced Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe with his shaky performance.
The Portuguese shot-stopper arguably could’ve done better for Osman Bukari’s goal as well as his 100th minute blunder, as the ball looped high in the air, where he could’ve punched it clear.
Of course, we can excuse Costa for being slightly nervous on his World Cup debut, but if he continues to perform like this in Group H, Tottenham and Newcastle may end up looking elsewhere.
