Paul Robinson has claimed that Leeds United goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, should be at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar because he is ‘good enough’, as he told Stadium Astro.

The former England international thinks if Leeds’ number one was selected by France, then he would be able to ‘challenge’ Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, who won the World Cup in 2018.

Whenever squads are selected for major tournaments, what is probably talked about more is those not selected, rather than those in the squad.

Well, Meslier was one that was left out by Didier Deschamps and West Ham’s Alphonse Areola was selected instead as a back-up option.

Former Tottenham and Leeds man Robinson thinks that was a mistake, as he highlighted how Alphonse Areola has ‘hardly played’ this season.

“For me, Illan Meslier at Leeds should be in that squad,” said Robinson. “He’s good enough. Areola has hardly played this season. Meslier would come in and challenge Lloris as a number one, I think.”

Well, even if France returns back with yet another World Cup trophy, Meslier might find that his international journey could take off post-World Cup.

Lloris is 35 and there needs to be a long-term replacement that should be brought in and, at 22, with no senior caps to his name, it’s high time Meslier was brought into play.
