England are optimistic that Harry Kane will overcome an injury concern to face the USA at the World Cup. But what are the international records of the Three Lions’ other strikers?

Well, it is The Guardian which reports England believe Kane will be available for selection in Al Khor on Friday. Gareth Southgate takes his squad to Al Bayt Stadium to face the USA in Group B. The Three Lions can secure a spot in the last 16 with a win after beating Iran 6-2.

Wales held the USA to a 1-1 draw in their opening match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Gareth Bale scored an 82nd-minute penalty to strike Timothy Weah’s 36th-minute opener out. England can move five points clear of third with one game to play by beating the USA.

England sent Kane for scans after an injury concern ahead of facing the USA

An injury for Kane during the Iran tie raised concern the England striker may miss the USA match on Friday. The Tottenham Hotspur star took a knock to his ankle from a poor tackle from Morteza Pouraliganji after 48th minutes. Yet Kane managed to play on until the 75th.

But England arranged a precautionary scan to determine the severity of any injury to Kane. The forward featuring in training this Wednesday has since helped to ease those fears. The Three Lions are now optimistic that their captain can play Gregg Berhalter’s side on Friday.

Any minutes in the Group B clash at Al Bayt Stadium would be the 29-year-old’s 77th game for his country. Kane has also scored 51 and created 16 goals over his caps so far. He made two of his assists against Iran after finding Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford to score.

Rashford or Callum Wilson would be in contention to start England’s match with the USA if an injury rules Kane out. So, with that in mind, HITC Football looks at the full international records of the other centre-forwards Southgate listed in his 26-man squad for Qatar 2022.

Rashford gave a good audition to replace Kane by scoring against Iran

Rashford gave a good audition to replace Kane due to an injury against the USA by scoring against Iran. The forward struck the back of the net only 49 seconds after replacing Bukayo Saka at the Khalifa International Stadium. He also fired with just his third touch of the ball.

The Manchester United star now has 13 goals to his name for England in all competitions, along with five assists over 47 caps. Rashford failed to find the back of the net over his six appearances at the last World Cup. The 25-year-old started one of his ties at Russia 2018.

Rashford has produced his most prolific record for England during European Championship qualifying matches. He boasts three goals and two assists over six games. The forward also has four goals and one assist over seven UEFA Nations League ties and four in 12 friendlies.

Wilson might have cost himself a World Cup goal by assisting Grealish

Wilson might have cost himself a World Cup goal after assisting Jack Grealish against Iran if Southgate looks elsewhere to replace Kane due to any injury against the USA. The 30-year-old unselfishly squared to the Manchester City midfielder to make it 6-1 rather than shoot.

A goal was on the cards had Newcastle United forward Wilson tried his luck against Alireza Beiranvand. Southgate introduced the Coventry native in place of Kane to limit the risk of any injury ahead of facing the USA. But Wilson did not attempt a shot whilst on the pitch.

The Iran tie was Wilson’s return to the international stage having not played for his nation since October 2019. He also only has one goal from five caps to date having scored against the USA on debut in a friendly during November 2018 whilst Kane was on England’s bench.

Southgate could try Sterling as a striker if an injury rules Kane out against the USA

Southgate could also try Sterling as a striker if Kane’s ankle injury rules the England captain out against the USA. The 27-year-old has sporadically occupied central areas with Chelsea this season. He also made regular appearances from the centre whilst at Manchester City.

It would not be new for Southgate to field Sterling in a central role, either. The 80-cap star partnered Kane in the middle during the 2018 World Cup in Russia but he only offered two assists and no goals. Most of Sterling’s 20 goals and 27 assists have been from the wing.

Additionally, it was from the left flank that Sterling scored once and assisted a goal against Iran. Chelsea’s £47.5m summer signing from Manchester City came in off the wing to poke Kane’s cross home. He also later fed Saka for the Arsenal winger to score his second goal.

Sterling’s fierce volley and perfectly timed run returned the forward’s first goal for England at the World Cup. He also now boasts three assists across 10 appearances on the FIFA stage after featuring at Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. Sterling has three goals in 10 Euros fixtures.
