The whodunnit is a sub-genre that largely faded into obscurity for quite some time, much to the disappointment of audiences who champion a good mystery. However, it’s come back in quite a big way with the release of efforts like Murder On The Orient Express, Death On The Nile, See How They Run, and most importantly, Knives Out.
Released in 2019, it was directed by Rian Johnson who had previously helmed Brick, Looper, and most famously Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After navigating a franchise blockbuster, he opted to create a small-scale comedy mystery with a stacked cast set mostly in one location.
It was acclaimed by both critics and general audiences alike, with fans eager to see Daniel Craig’s central detective Benoit Blanc return for more straight after.
Indeed, he has, but do you need to see Knives Out before Glass Onion?
Do you need to see Knives Out before Glass Onion?
No, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery presents audiences with a brand new mystery to dive into. Although Daniel reprises his Knives Out role, the central mystery in the predecessor plays no role in the sequel.
Those who haven’t seen Knives Out will have no issue whatsoever following the plot, as all of the characters that Benoit encounters are new to the emerging franchise.
All audiences need to know is that Benoit is itching for a new and difficult case to tackle, but this is addressed in the first act of Glass Onion.
Ultimately, the Knives Out franchise presents the opportunity to offer viewers a brand new mystery and cast with each movie.
As for what to expect this time around, tech billionaire Miles Bron (played by Edward Norton) invites his friends to his private island for a murder mystery and Benoit is unexpectedly invited, despite having no relationship with the guests or host.
However, it’s soon revealed that the detective has a genuine case to solve when the party is interrupted by a startling crime.
