What are doubloons on TikTok?

Doubloons are a virtual currency on TikTok. People are collecting the fictional coins, putting them in a bank, using them to buy things and even getting in debt.

However, doubloons aren’t actually real and no one is purchasing real items with them, it’s all just a silly social media meme.

People are keeping track of how many they have and using them to converse with other TikTok users, and the trend has gone viral on the app.

To make things even weirder, the trend involves a bizarre cat who is the ‘god of doubloons’ and gives out the currency to social media users.

Basically, it’s all just another stupid TikTok trend that means nothing at all, but it’s entertaining internet users nonetheless.

Oh, and if you see people talking about dabloons, it’s exactly the same thing – lots of people are just misspelling the word.

Doubloons are real Spanish coins

The trend is based on a historic gold coin called a doubloon, which was worth around four Spanish dollars or 32 reales and were minted in Spain.

They were used in Spain, New Spain, Peru and Nueve Granada, which are the modern-day countries Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.

Doubloons were made of 6.766 grams of 22-karat gold and were a common form of currency in the 17th and 18th centuries.

They’re often associated with pirates and were traded in an era known as the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’. They’re mentioned in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies too.

Doubloons were often carried on Spanish ships through the Caribbean and used to trade for things like silks and spices.

These ships were attacked by pirates looking for gold who would steal the doubloons, and the coins were often found on sunken pirate ships.

Now it’s a cryptocurrency too

After the TikTok trend went viral, someone turned doubloons into a real cryptocurrency, so it is technically a real virtual currency now.

As revealed on Coin Market Cap, one Doubloon (DBL) is worth $0.0004781 right now and there is a current supply of 4,845,824.4.

Cryptocurrency, better known as just crypto, is a digital currency and medium of exchange that works through a computer network that is not reliant on any central authority, like a bank.

The most valuable crypto, and the first, is Bitcoin which was founded in 2009. Ethereum and Ripple are other popular ones.

It’s unlikely that Doubloons would ever actually make it as a profitable cryptocurrency, and the trend will probably die down in a few weeks – but we’ll have to wait and see!
