Cristiano Ronaldo has left Manchester United and one report claims that he is weighing up a move to sign for Newcastle United.

Mercifully, the Ronaldo against United saga has reached its end.

This feels like it has been coming for months with Ronaldo on a collision course with Erik ten Hag.

From refusing to come on against Tottenham Hotspur to the ridiculous Piers Morgan interview, Ronaldo has burned his bridges United.

The Red Devils announced on Monday that Ronaldo’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent, ending his second Old Trafford stint.

Cristiano Ronaldo considering Newcastle United move

So where next for Ronaldo?

It’s hard to imagine any truly elite clubs moving for him.

Now 37, Ronaldo doesn’t offer much in terms of pressing, hold-up play or creativity – key factors in the final third of the pitch.

Marca claim that two clubs are keen though – Newcastle United and Al-Nassr.

It’s stated that Ronaldo is torn between the two and that Newcastle wanted to sign him last summer.

We have a number of issues with this report.

Firstly, it’s stated that both Newcastle and Al-Nassr are owned by Mohammed Bin Salman but there has never been any confirmed link between Al-Nassr and Bin Salman, or at least one that we can find.

This line keeps being repeated with regards to the Ronaldo rumour but doesn’t appear to be true, immediately bringing the rumour into question.

Newcastle have impressed this season and signing Ronaldo just wouldn’t make any sense.

Their philosophy has mostly been to sign players with bright futures; the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

When Newcastle have signed experienced players, it has been very calculated with deals for Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn.

Blowing big wages on an ageing Ronaldo just doesn’t fit the project and doesn’t seem like a deal Dan Ashworth would back.

Then there is Ronaldo’s fit into Eddie Howe’s style.

Howe has turned Newcastle into a high-pressing machine and Ronaldo showed at Manchester United that he just isn’t a great fit for that approach.

We’re calling rubbish on this rumour and can’t see Ronaldo turning out in a Newcastle shirt any time soon.
