Speaking on Michael Calvin’s Football People Podcast, Glenn Hoddle has been speaking about who could win the World Cup.

Football’s greatest festival starts this weekend, and there are a good eight or nine teams who will fancy their chances of going all the way.

From Brazil and France to the Netherlands and Portugal, there are so many teams who could win this tournament.

One of the pre-tournament favourites are Argentina, but Hoddle doesn’t fancy the South Americans to be victorious due to a number of perceived weak spots in their side, naming Nicolas Otamendi and Spurs-owned Giovani Lo Celso as two regular starters who he doesn’t rate highly.

Weaknesses

Hoddle named players like Otamendi and Lo Celso as reasons why Argentina may not win the World Cup.

“We’ve got as much chance as anyone. France and Brazil will be favourites with a bit of Argentina, but Argentina are a funny team, but, no disrespect, they have players like Otamendi and players like Lo Celso who can’t even get in the Tottenham team in their starting XI,” Hoddle said.

Get his point

Of course, Giovani Lo Celso won’t actually have any say on whether or not Argentina will win the World Cup due to the fact he’s injured, but we can understand Hoddle’s point here.

There are, quite simply, a few too many holes in this squad.

The fact that Lo Celso is considered a key player when he’s fit is a problem, while Otamendi is a few years past his peak it has to be said.

However, we’ve seen underwhelming players win World Cup’s in the past – Kleberson won with Brazil in 2002, Fabio Grosso won with Italy in 2006 while Steven N’Zonzi played in the final for France last time out – none of those are world beaters, are they?

Argentina are definitely in the mix here, even if their midfield and backline could be a bit stronger.
