Liverpool are currently trying to agree a new contract for Roberto Firmino with his current terms set to expire at the end of the season.

As things stand, the Brazil international becomes a free agent in July, but according to Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany, the Reds are making good progress in negotiations.

Liverpool make Firmino progress

Well, Firmino has been at Anfield for seven years now, and he seems happy to stay even longer.

Plettenburg believes negotiations between Liverpool and the 31-year-old are “progressing very well” as we enter the World Cup break.

Firmino has surprisingly been left out of the 26-man squad by Tite, so at least Liverpool can now sit down with him and discuss the new contract further without having to worry about distracting the Brazilian.

The Liverpool No.9 has actually been one of the best performers under Jürgen Klopp this season, despite enduring a very quiet 2021/22 campaign in which it seemed like his powers were fading.

Firmino has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 13 Premier League appearances so far this term, more than the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Mohamed Salah and Wilfried Zaha have managed to net.

Liverpool right to keep Firmino

Some may argue that it’s time for Liverpool to move on from Firmino, although his impressive range of abilities mean he can be a key player under Klopp for a few more years yet.

The Maceió-born forward is excellent at dropping deep to link up the play, so we see no reason why he cannot play at the tip of a midfield three going forward as his pace begins to wane.

Furthermore, Firmino is an extremely popular member of the squad who Liverpool fans adore, so his bubbly presence around the club will certainly be appreciated should he sign a new contract.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as a breakthrough in negotiations could happen during the World Cup.
