According to The Athletic’s Matt Slater, Steve Pagliuca is a potential bidder for Liverpool FC as FSG look to sell up.
The Reds are on the market, and Slater states that Pagliuca has been looking to purchase a football club for some time and that he knows a few people in FSG.
It’s not ridiculous to suggest that Pagliuca could be the Reds’ next owner, but there is one issue that Liverpool fans will want to know about with the American.
Indeed, sadly, the US businessman has backed the formation of a Super League in the past, stating that the concept would make sense on paper for owners of these big clubs.

Pagliuca on the Super League
The Boston Celtics owner spoke to Bloomberg about the Super League back in 2021.
“On paper, conceptually moving to a more American-style sports ownership situation would be great for those big clubs,” Pagliuca said.
“Right now in Europe there are no controls. You can own a major franchise and be relegated. That is a lot of uncertainty from a business standpoint. They’ve been speaking about this for 20 years now, but on paper it makes a lot of sense for those large clubs. It will cause a lot of disruption and you’ll see a battle go on, but the large owners want to capitalise on that and want a more stable structure.”
Dangerous
These are the dangers that we so often hear about when it comes to American owners in English football.
With rumours of the return of the Super League bubbling under the surface, Pagliuca buying Liverpool and Todd Boehly buying Chelsea could be two catalysts that see this ugly idea resurface.
Football is such a beloved sport because of the sporting merit of a level playing field, but in the Super League format, that doesn’t exist.
Pagliuca is a potential bidder for Liverpool, but the Reds need to be wary about his Super League stance.
