Paul Fogarty

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Manifest*

Since the very first episode of Manifest, the fates of many of the show’s characters have been well and truly up in the air after the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Flight 828 and the subsequent revelations that have followed.

While those aboard the flight experienced a moment of turbulence before landing to find themselves five years in the future, to the rest of the world the plane had crashed into the sea, killing everyone on board.

Since their resurrection, those who survived Flight 828 have all been given a Death Date – but what exactly is the ominous countdown and how does a person survive it?

What is a Death Date in Manifest?

In Manifest, a Death Date is a second date on which a person who has been resurrected is scheduled to die for good.

A person’s Death Date is calculated by the exact amount of time between their first death and their resurrection.

In the case of Flight 828’s passengers, as they were missing for more than five years, they all have five and a half years to live before their Death Date arrives – which is scheduled to occur on June 2, 2024.

However, as shown in episode 9 of season 4, the Death Date of Flight 828’s passengers appears to be coinciding with the apocalypse after Angelina’s misuse of the Omega Sapphire has left the world a fiery hellhole and on the brink of destruction.

First known Death Date victim

The first victim of their Death Date was a man named James Griffin.

The character, played by Marc Menchaca, appeared in episodes 14 and 15 of Manifest’s first season.

Griffin had orchestrated the robbery of $70 million dollars from an armored car and while making his getaway, the vehicle crashed and plummeted into the East River where he was trapped and drowned.

After three days – 82 hours and eight minutes to be exact – the getaway vehicle was recovered and Griffin was miraculously resurrected and sent to the hospital where he experienced a Calling of a catastrophic explosion.

Michaela explained the Calling to him and he decided to use it as a ‘get out of jail free’ card, hoping that helping to prevent a mass death event would excuse his earlier crimes.

But moments before he was about to appear on a talk show to reveal what he had learned, Griffin suddenly began to drown to death on dry land in a TV studio – exactly 82 hours and eight minutes from when he had been resurrected.

How did Zeke survive his?

Zeke survived his Death Date in Manifest by following the visions he saw in the Callings.

Matt Long’s Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Landon has been a key character since his introduction in season 1 as he is the only character so far to be able to survive his looming death date.

Zeke originally froze to death in a blizzard in but was revived a year later which is when he first came into contact with Michaela and Cal.

Like the survivors of Flight 828, Zeke began to experience Callings and he would follow them and make sure the events he saw were allowed to transpire.

In the final episode of season 2, with his Death Date looming, Zeke saw a calling showing him where to find Cal, who had been kidnapped, but it also showed his own death.

Zeke was able to save Cal from the kidnappers as the Calling predicted with his body showing more signs of frostbite and hypothermia as his Death Date grew closer.

But after saving Cal and plunging to his second death in a freezing lake, Zeke was miraculously resurrected once again, being brought back to life as glowing light appeared from his body and wiped away the signs of frostbite.

Following Zeke’s revival, Ben and Michaela conclude that Zeke survived his Death Date as he followed the visions shown in the Callings, almost as if they were a message passed down by a higher power and his reward was survival.
