It is no secret that Liverpool were keen on the addition of a brand-new midfielder during the summer.
While it seemed as if Jurgen Klopp was eyeing moves for Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni, Borussia Dortmund refused to sell the former, while the latter made his dream switch to Real Madrid.
With the Reds having not brought in an extra body in the middle of the park, the side have particularly suffered in terms of a lack of quality in said department.
The likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have experienced a sharp decline in form, while Thiago Alcantara’s fitness struggles has severely impacted his availability.
Despite being supremely talented, wonderkids such as Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho have unsurprisingly struggled to carry an underperforming Liverpool side on their young shoulders.
As a result, it has been revealed that the Merseyside-based side have kept a close eye on two midfielders, as the chances of a fresh face coming in January exists.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, Liverpool looked at the likes of RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer and Wolves’ Ruben Neves late in the summer window.
Keeping that in mind, it has been suggested that it would not be a surprise to see the club sign ‘at least’ one midfielder in January, even if said names stay put at their respective sides.
Interestingly, Laimer’s current contract runs out in 2023, which means that the Reds could snap him up, despite the player previously showing an interest in heading to Bayern Munich.

After all, Leipzig will welcome the prospect of getting a fee for one of their most key performers over the last few years.
As for Neves as well, his deal at the Molineux expires in 2024, which would prompt Wolves to let go of their lynchpin before he enters the final year of his contract.
With both transfer targets being top-drawer midfielders, Liverpool will seemingly try to make either, if not both deals come to fruition.
