Technically speaking, there are only two places separating West Brom and Plymouth Argyle in the Football League pyramid.
The Baggies, despite a nervy and morale-boosting 1-0 triumph over Blackpool on Tuesday night, remain 23rd in the Championship table; Carlos Corberan’s underachieving charges only kept off of the bottom by a Huddersfield Town side he guided to Wembley just six months ago.
Plymouth, in contrast, extended their lead at the top of League One to four points, coming from 1-0 and 2-1 down to overcome Devon rivals Exeter City at Home Park. That was Argyle’s ninth win in a row on their own turf; a new club record.

“I’m really proud of that stat,” highly-rated head coach Steven Schumacher beams, in conversation with Plymouth Live. “We will work as hard as we can to get 10 out of 10.”

‘10 out of 10’, meanwhile, would be a fitting description of Plymouth’s season thus far. 38-year-old Schumacher, in his first senior managerial role, continues to build brilliantly upon the foundations laid down by Ryan Lowe; a team stuck in the fourth-tier just two seasons ago dreaming of the Championship after a decade away.
And, having been linked with the West Brom job last month following the sacking of Steve Bruce (The Sun), there is now a very real chance Schumacher’s Plymouth could soon be joining – or, perhaps, replacing – the Baggies in England’s second tier.
“If there has been an interest from West Brom, I think that’s great,” Schumacher said recently; committing his future to a Plymouth side now in record-breaking nick.
“Because that shows we are doing something well here. You wouldn’t get spoken about if you were sitting down the bottom of the league or mid-table.
“It just shows the good job that everyone is doing. Not just me.”
